New Year, New Habit
What little things can you do this year to improve your health and everyday life? Let's start with a simple practice that many ignore or don't see the benefit in, like stretching.
As you grow older flexibility becomes more important for your health. Improving your flexibility helps with your mobility, stability, joints, and common everyday aches. The more you stretch the more tension and stress you release from your body and mind. Furthermore, stretching allows for better blood flow throughout your body, increasing your energy levels.
A few things to keep in mind when stretching:
- See stretching as a workout and not a warm up - Stretching is most effective when muscles are warm. You can go for a walk or a light jog to warm up your muscles before stretching.
- Reduce bouncing - You should hold a stretch for about 10-30 seconds and repeat three or four times.
- Focus on good technique & be consistent - Try to focus on major muscle tendons, such as: neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, pelvis, hips, and legs.
- Stretch at least 2-3 days per week for at least 10 minutes a day.
